General Motors has unveiled a new off-road variant of the Chevrolet Silverado EV designed to compete in the prestigious Mint 400 desert race in Nevada.
The Chevrolet Silverado EV ZR2 is set to showcase the brand’s commitment to performance and innovation within the electric vehicle sector.
Good news for off-road enthusiasts, the concept vehicle enters the race in the Open Production EV class, which accommodates modified production vehicles, although GM claims that 98% of its parts are production-based.
A powerful tri-motor setup that generates an impressive 1,100 horsepower
The prototype shifts away from the standard Silverado EV’s dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, instead incorporating a powerful tri-motor setup that generates an impressive 1,100 horsepower. This powertrain is likely derived from the GMC Hummer EV, as both vehicles share similar architectural foundations—hinting at GM’s strategy to leverage existing technology across its electric lineup.
Designed for rugged terrains, the ZR2 features an elevated suspension equipped with dampers from Canadian firm Multimatic, along with locking differentials and robust skid plates. It rolls on 37-inch BF Goodrich KM3 tires optimized for mud and rough terrain, making it a formidable contender in off-road situations.
However, while the Silverado EV ZR2 boasts remarkable specs, it is considered a milder option compared to other recent electric off-road concepts; notably, competitors like Audi and Genesis have showcased more extreme designs.
Despite the excitement surrounding the ZR2, GM is not currently discussing a production version, but it is preparing to launch an off-road-oriented Silverado EV Trail Boss model for the 2026 model year. This variant will include a factory lift kit and 35-inch all-terrain tires, aimed at scaling the off-road landscapes of locations like Moab, Utah.
As the EV market increasingly embraces adventure and exploration, the Silverado EV ZR2 signifies a strategic step for GM in capturing the interest of off-road enthusiasts and demonstrating electric capability in challenging environments.
