Cyberpunk 2077 is the quintessential post-apocalyptic role-playing game of the last two years. Nothing really comes close to the open world, intensely futuristic environment of Night City, and insane cars and tech. But we’ve been waiting quite a while for something new from CD Projekt Red, the game’s developers. Luckily, thanks to a kind and generous developer from the CD Projekt Red team, we’re a little less in the dark as to the future of the post-apocalyptic open-world RPG.
Naturally, the news was first spotted by Reddit. This time in the form of a live stream presented by Cyberpunk 2077’s quest director, Pawel Sasko. Let’s first get the disappointing news out of the way. Sasko, unfortunately, didn’t go into particulars of what exactly CD Projekt Red is planning for any future expansions and content; that is unfortunately still a very closely guarded secret.
‘I, unfortunately, cannot tell you anything about our future plans,’ Sasko said.
He did, however, stress that the developer’s plans surrounding pumping Cyberpunk 2077 full of new expansions and DLC haven’t changed. In Sasko’s words: ‘There’s still work to be done. We are working on stuff for you. Like I’m literally daily reviewing quests, talking to people about stuff, so it’s happening.’ In another quote elsewhere in the live stream, Sasko reinforced this statement: ‘I can assure you that we are working on expansions; we’re working on stuff for you guys.’
One ‘expansion’ that has occurred in the meantime is that the release of patch 1.5 also brought the highly-anticipated game to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X earlier this year. So while we’re still waiting for expansions in terms of the lore and order of Night City (yes, it’s a pun), at least 2022 brought a literal expansion in terms of how widely the post-apocalyptic open-world RPG is available to be played. Talk about looking for a silver lining.
Unfortunately, even with a full live stream focusing in part on the future of Cyberpunk 2077, we are no closer to real, tangible details on what Night City might look like in terms of new tech, vehicles, missions, or lore, at the very least we know that change is coming.
The vague nature of Sasko’s statements, however, also doesn’t allude to a specific time frame for these expansions that CD Projekt Red is actively working on. We could see them later this year, or not before 2023/24. We simply don’t know. If you’d like to know more about the patch we mentioned earlier, check out the secret contained in patch 1.5 and how it changes Cyberpunk 2077.
