David Cronenberg is one of those filmmakers who, despite not making the headlines, comes back into the limelight from time to time. The last time he did so was just a few months ago, when he released his film Crimes of the Future and brought body horror back into fashion. Now, he is back in the spotlight for the remake of one of his most celebrated films: Dead Ringers.

Starring the eccentric Jeremy Irons, the original film dates from 1988 and tells how two identical twins who operate together substitute in everyday life to help each other. It is a cult film that features several plot twists and, as usual with Cronenberg, lots of gore.

Now, a remake of the film is about to arrive in the form of an Amazon Prime Video series starring Rachel Weisz. However, the fiction will be very different from what we saw in the original film, at least from what it looks like in its first trailer.

When is Dead Ringers released?

In this new version of the story, the twins change sex to make way for Weisz’s spectacular performance. In addition, instead of being set in Vancouver, where the original story took place, it travels to New York to become more global.

Even so, the series maintains many aspects of the original. The protagonists’ last name is the same, Mantle. And Rachel Weisz herself, a fan of the original film and producer of the series, has ensured that, although it takes other paths, it maintains Cronenberg’s spirit.

The premiere of the series is scheduled for April 21 on Amazon Prime Video. Undoubtedly, this is being an unbeatable month for Jeff Bezos’ streaming platform.
