Every year, the Oscars come under debate for one reason or another. In recent times, we’ve had interesting proposals such as the Best Popular Film category, a category that almost came into existence to honor studio films like Marvel. However, this ultimately fell through. Now, there’s another quite special request that could potentially be implemented soon.

Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick, has been quite frustrated for a while by the fact that action movies are not appreciated at the Oscars. It’s something that has been happening throughout history and seemed like it would continue that way. However, Stahelski has been talking with the Academy and seems to be reaching an agreement for a new category: the Oscar for Best Stunts.

A new Oscar is on the way

As reported by Screen Rant, the filmmaker has been trying for years to have the work of a large part of the teams in these types of films recognized. Not only in action movies but also in other genres that require martial artists, stunt doubles, and many other figures that are not considered in the awards. This is how he explains it:

“If you thought a movie had very good action in the last 100 years, you nominated it for Best Sound or Best Editing; it’s hilarious. But I think that is changing: the Academy has been very helpful over the past year to make things progress. I really trust that in two years, we’ll have an Academy Award for stunts; they just need to figure out the how, not so much the why because all the whys are good.”

In this way, the story might soon change, and certain aspects that had not been considered until now may start to be valued. If it already happens with technical features, why not with the human ones?
