Although Apple TV+ has become the home of science fiction, Netflix is not far behind when it comes to genre proposals. The streaming platform has some of the best sci-fi movies and series in history in its catalog, as well as preparing such magnificent fictions as The Three-Body Problem.

But while we wait for this series and browse through the VOD service catalog, we can enjoy a different science fiction proposal. It’s called Heroes out of orbit, one of the most popular and funniest genre films in history. And despite being a satirical comedy about Star Trek, its quality is not far behind other great films by renowned directors.

Galaxy Quest (Heroes out of Orbit) was released in 1999 under the direction of Dean Parisot. The plot follows a group of actors who used to star in a successful science fiction television series called Galaxy Quest. However, now, years after the series was canceled, these actors find themselves trapped in a surreal situation when they are mistaken for real aliens who believe that the series broadcasts were historical documents instead of fiction.

The cast is led by Tim Allen as Jason Nesmith, the egocentric captain of the spaceship in the series, Sigourney Weaver as Gwen DeMarco, Alan Rickman as Alexander Dane, and Tony Shalhoub as Fred Kwan, among others. When these actors are transported into space by the Thermians, an innocent and devoted alien race, they are forced to face comical and dangerous situations that they had only faced on screen.

“Heroes Out of Orbit” stands out for its ability to combine parody with a genuine love for the science fiction genre. The film skillfully satirizes the clichés and stereotypes of space series, while paying homage to the dedication of fans and the connection that fiction can have with reality. The plot unfolds with a perfect balance between comedy and adventure, with hilarious situations that explore the gap between the actors’ perception of their own fame and the reality of their lives.

What makes Héroes fuera de órbita worth watching is its universal charm. Although it mocks science fiction culture and fan phenomenon, it does so with respect and affection. The movie offers moments of genuine laughter and surprising doses of emotion. In addition, the cast delivers memorable performances, with Tim Allen standing out for his comedic arrogance and Alan Rickman for his skill in portraying a disillusioned actor.
