Disney has closed 2024 with a significant year at the box office, holding the top three spots of the highest-grossing films thanks to its animated successes Inside Out 2, Moana 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. These productions have been crucial for the company to overcome recent economic difficulties, marking a trend that seems to continue into 2025.
Disney seeks to continue its successes by returning to one of its big box office hits
In this context, Disney has announced the highly anticipated release of Coco 2, a sequel to the acclaimed 2017 film that explored the traditions of the Day of the Dead in Mexico. During an annual meeting with shareholders, CEO Bob Iger emphasized that, although production is in its early stages, fans can expect a film full of humor, heart, and adventure. This decision reflects Disney’s strategy of turning to sequels of successful titles after several failures, such as Mufasa, and the controversies surrounding The Little Mermaid.
The team that made the first installment will return for Coco 2, including Oscar-winning director Lee Unkrich, his co-director Adrián Molina, and producer Mark Nielsen. The first Coco made history by being the first film with a nine-figure budget that featured an entirely Latino main cast, opening new opportunities in the industry for stories that resonate with a diverse audience. Among its achievements, Coco won two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Remember Me.
Although the details of the plot of Coco 2 are still scarce, it is expected that the story will pick up the adventures of Miguel, the protagonist of the first film. In addition, it is anticipated that Disney will schedule upcoming releases of other successful classics like Frozen 3, which has been postponed to 2027. This clear strategy of the company aims to ensure box office success by continuing stories that have proven to connect with the audience.
