The long-awaited sequel to Dune will finally arrive in theaters on March 15th, after a significant delay due to the Hollywood actors and writers strike. Dune: Part Two will conclude the original story of Paul Atreides, fully adapting Frank Herbert’s original book.

However, for Denis Villeneuve, the director of the film, the story he has told so far does not seem to be enough, and he also wants to adapt the sequel book of Dune, Dune Messiah, to the big screen. This would be the perfect ending for the filmmaker, but is the entire cast prepared in case Warner Bros gives the green light to the project?

Will Dune Messiah become a reality? We will soon find out

It has been in statements for the website Total Film where Villeneuve has spoken about the second part of Dune and a possible future of the saga. According to the director, the second part makes up “a complete story“, but however, he believes that it is a much more “heartbreaking” sequel, and therefore it may leave a bad taste that would be compensated with the third part:

“All the elements of the book are there. But I think the film adaptation is more tragic than the book. The way the second part ends… it would create a complete balance to finish Paul’s story in the third part“.

The filmmaker has also explained that the entire cast needed for that third part would be willing to join the project again, including Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. However, we still have to wait and see if the franchise will end or become a trilogy. Everything depends on how the upcoming sequel performs.
