Everything we know about The Hunt for Gollum, the upcoming film of The Lord of the Rings

It seemed like Warner Bros. had completely lost the franchise of The Lord of the Rings when, after the Hobbit trilogy, the next thing that was done with J.R.R. Tolkien’s books was the series The Rings of Power, by Amazon Prime Video. But, nothing could be further from the truth, the studio continues with its original rights, and now they are going to use them to create a new movie for theaters.

The movie will be titled The Hunt for Gollum and has been announced as a surprise to expand the universe created by Peter Jackson in recent years. But what do we know exactly about this new movie? We will explain it to you below.

What is The Hunt for Gollum about?

The Hunt for Gollum will join the animated film The War of the Rohirrim as the new movies that will expand the known universe of The Lord of the Rings by Warner Bros. As explained by studio executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, the focus of these films will not be to retell Tolkien’s novels, but to explore ideas and elements that were left unexplored in the previous trilogies.

“Despite all the scope and carefully packaged details in the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe devised by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored by cinema,” they explain. “The opportunity to invite fans to delve deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor.”

The movie, for now, seems to cover the 17 years in which Frodo kept the ring in the Shire, before setting off to Mordor. During these years, Gandalf and Aragorn were searching for Gollum to find out the whereabouts of the ring, and it seems that this is what we will see in the movie.

Who is behind The Hunt for Gollum?

In the movie we will be able to see, once again, Andy Serkis’ Gollum. And this is not a coincidence; the director of the film will be Serkis himself, who after directing Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, will sit in the director’s chair again with a feature film that seems to be far superior to the previous ones.

On the other hand, we have good news: Peter Jackson will be the producer of this new film. In this way, we will have a similar vision to the previous films, maintaining a harmony that will suit it perfectly.

When will The Hunt for Gollum be released?

Currently, it is considered a release for 2026, with this year for pre-production and the following year for filming and editing.
