Five Nights at Freddy’s is a video game franchise that has been terrifying various audiences for years with its possessed animatronics. It has been clear for a while now that it has become more than just a video game; it has become an icon of pop culture in recent years. However, it was with the movie adaptation of the IP that this trend was confirmed.

As we saw a few weeks ago, Five Nights at Freddy’s has become a horror film set to terrify the world this Halloween. But what few expected was that it would become such a viral success, achieving almost unprecedented records in the genre. A phenomenon that very few movies can reach.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is no longer just for gamers

Despite the not-so-positive reviews, Five Nights at Freddy’s movie starring Josh Hutcherson has closed its first weekend in the United States with a staggering number: 78 million dollars. This marks the best opening for a horror movie in 2023, surpassing The Nun 2.

Furthermore, it has achieved other records: it is the best debut for a Blumhouse studio production and the best debut for a PG-13 rated horror movie, surpassing the 68.1 million of The Mummy Returns in 2001. Moreover, FNAF has secured the fifth-best October opening in the United States, behind Joker in 2019 (96.2 million), Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour this year (92.8 million), Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 2021 (90 million), and Venom in 2018 (80.2 million).

It’s clear that it’s a phenomenon to be reckoned with, and in the rest of the world, it has already reached 130 million dollars. Five Nights at Freddy’s is no longer just for gamers, and all signs point to an upcoming sequel.
