Nun vs. Nun: Sister Death and The Nun 2 compete on Halloween, but which is better?

Halloween is just around the corner, and as usual, streaming platforms have geared up to provide users with the best movie and blanket plans. This year, competition has emerged between the nuns, as both HBO Max and Netflix are releasing movies on their platforms about sisters and convents.

On one hand, HBO Max brings to its platform for the occasion “The Nun 2,” the sequel to the Warren universe movie that has also become the most-watched horror feature of the year. On the other hand, Netflix is releasing “Sister Death,” a spin-off of “Verónica” directed by Paco Plaza as an original production for the streaming service. But which one is better?

Sister Death against The Nun 2

We already know practically everything about The Nun 2, and the truth is that the reviews weren’t too good. While the first part was already somewhat weak, the sequel has received rather negative reviews from both critics and the audience. It’s not that it’s a bad movie, but it does fall into the typical horror movie tropes, which leaves it as a fun jump-scare film… and not much more.

On the other hand, “Sister Death” has already premiered at the Sitges Film Festival and other places, and the reviews have been much better. In this case, the movie benefits from the best of its director, Paco Plaza (REC, Quien a hierro mata), an expert with a steady hand in filmmaking. Furthermore, it draws from the universe of “Veronica,” another great film with all sorts of positive attributes.

While both films serve their purpose, it’s clear that “Sister Death” is a standout movie, while “The Nun 2” appears more like another product in the Warren universe. It’s perfect for fans of “Insidious” and similar films, but it doesn’t seem like it will become a cult film.
