General Motors’ decision to eliminate Apple CarPlay from its 2024 EV lineup has already sparked controversy, but early real-world experiences suggest that the replacement system, “Ultifi,” is far from ready. Recent reports highlight severe software glitches, system crashes, and frustrating user experiences, raising concerns about GM’s bold move to abandon a proven infotainment platform.
Major software failures and endless reboots
Early reviews of the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV reveal serious malfunctions in the new infotainment system, leading to frustrating and even dangerous situations. According to Edmunds, their test vehicle suffered from an infinite reboot loop, rendering navigation and media controls completely useless during a trip. The system would cycle between shutting down, restarting, displaying a map centered in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and then shutting off again.
InsideEVs also encountered major software failures, with the infotainment screen going completely blank during a drive. While some functions, such as heating and AC, remained operational, users lost access to navigation and media controls. Attempts to reboot the system forced the driver to stop and search online forums for troubleshooting tips, a situation far more dangerous than simply using CarPlay.
GM’s gamble on a flawed system
GM justified its decision to ditch CarPlay by claiming it would reduce driver distractions and provide a more integrated experience. However, early feedback suggests that the opposite is happening. Users are forced to troubleshoot system failures on the road, ultimately leading to more distractions and safety risks.
While some reviewers have had positive experiences, the overwhelming consensus is that Ultifi is far from reliable. Unless GM addresses these widespread issues, its decision to abandon CarPlay could become a costly mistake that drives consumers toward competitors.
