Two weeks ahead of Google I/O, the company has announced plans for its own fitness platform with Google Fit. The new system will collect data on health and physical fitness across various wearables and devices, aggregating it through open APIs to integrate into what Google is calling its new ‘fitness ecosystem’.

Similar to Apple’s HealthKit service for iOS 8 previewed weeks ago at WWDC, Forbes is reporting that Google has similar ambitions with Google Fit. The health system will collect data including weight, pulse, and exercise and training info via wearable devices and mobile apps.

The data will be aggregated via a smartphone app, which you’ll be able to link to your Google account with Google Fit. Open APIs means that health related apps will be able to connect with and share data across devices and within the Google Fit ecosystem.

Google’s tried to get into the fitness sector in the past with Google Health back in 2008, a venture that was shut down in 2012 due to lack of interest. Since then, the uptake and use of health related apps and available products has surged. This time, Google has a much bigger market with its Android phones, along with more ammo in the form of its upcoming Android Wear devices.

Expect to hear more details about Google Fit at Google I/O on June 25th and 26th.
