Google has issued a warning and a guarantee regarding the issue of spam through files in Drive and sends a message reminding that, although the Drive environment is secure, links included to external sites to Google Drive are not under its control and may be unsafe websites.

Nowadays, cybercrimes have multiplied on a large scale, as there is an increasing digital presence of users on the Internet, the volume of eCommerce grows every year, and these two factors cause cybercriminals to actively seek users to steal their personal data, accounts, and money.

Drive is safe, but the links are external

Lately, Google Drive has been subject to many spam attacks from dangerous senders. For that reason, Google has come out to remind that, although the content shared on Drive is safe because it goes through previous controls to prevent viruses, the external links that may be included in said content go beyond Google’s control in its ecosystem.

In this way, Google’s warning serves as a reminder for users not to let their guard down just because they feel safe in the Google Drive environment. Although Drive is indeed secure, external links aim to take users out of Drive and lead them into potentially more dangerous spaces, whether it be for tracking purposes, risk of receiving viruses, or data theft through phishing.

The growth of Drive as a service

Google Drive has been offering cloud services to all Gmail users for many years, and although the base of its service has not changed much during this time, it has improved in many details. For example, one of the most recent improvements, related to searches, allows iOS users to search for content more easily in their Drive, something that adds to other functionalities such as scanning documents.

In addition, since Google Drive is a free service, access to cloud services has become universalized by this application provided by Google. It is not the only one that does it, since Microsoft also has OneDrive, its own cloud, to synchronize files and documents, although its maximum free storage is 8GB, while Drive’s is 15GB, practically double.
