If your old Chromecast has stopped working and you’re not ready to spend money on a new device, there’s an easy and affordable solution—especially if you have an unused Android phone lying around. With just a few components and the right setup, you can repurpose that phone as a functional Chromecast, capable of streaming content directly to your TV.
What you need to get started
To begin, make sure your old phone supports video output via HDMI. Ideally, it should run at least Android 4.1 and support MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link). To verify compatibility, you can use the “MHL Checker” app from the Google Play Store.
Next, you’ll need the right HDMI adapter cable. For phones with USB-C ports, use a USB-C to HDMI cable. If the device uses microUSB, you’ll need a microUSB to HDMI adapter—these are usually inexpensive and easy to find.
Setting up your phone as a Chromecast
Install the Cast Receiver app from the Play Store on your old phone. Grant the app permission to display over other apps. While the free version allows short testing, the full version (around €4.79) unlocks continuous use.
Then, connect the phone to your TV using the adapter and switch your TV input to the corresponding HDMI port. You should now see the phone’s screen mirrored—or a simplified desktop view—on your television.
From this point, you can cast content wirelessly from another device, like your primary phone or tablet, just as you would with a regular Chromecast. Note that DRM-protected content won’t work, but for most videos, photos, and music, this setup is surprisingly smooth and effective.
