It’s the most anticipated game of the decade, and yesterday, almost broke the internet when they announced, for the first time, that a trailer for the next “big Grand Theft Auto” would be released in early December, most likely during The Game Awards.

And while it’s true that we don’t know anything concrete about the game, not even if it will be called GTA 6 (though everyone assumes it will be), there are a few details that seem certain.

Firstly, GTA VI will feature the series’ first female protagonist, influenced by the story of Bonnie and Clyde. Another widely assumed detail is that GTA VI will also be set in a fictional version of Miami, similar to GTA: Vice City.

GTA 6 could leverage AI to be a better game

On the eve of a major earnings presentation by the parent company Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of the company, revealed new details about the upcoming game and how the rise of generative artificial intelligence could further enhance the next Grand Theft Auto.

When asked about the benefits of AI for the video game industry during an interview at the Paley International Council Summit held on November 7, attended by Inverse, Zelnick expressed optimism about the technology.

However, he cautioned that he believes it “can be better, but almost certainly won’t be faster or cheaper,” as he anticipates the race to adopt AI will necessitate significant investments from Take-Two to develop their own.

However, that investment might be worthwhile. Zelnick stated that one area where generative AI can enhance games is in non-playable characters (NPCs). Specifically, the technology could add more variety to dialogue trees and encourage players to return.

“Everyone’s working on it,” he said. “You’re a playable character interacting with a non-playable character. That interaction is currently scripted. And non-playable characters typically aren’t that interesting. You could imagine all NPCs becoming really interesting and fun.”

It remains to be seen whether GTA 6 will incorporate generative AI in any way (whether with its NPCs or to create a larger map as in Starfield). But for now, Zelnick remains tight-lipped about the recently confirmed open-world sequel.
