For iPhone users looking to simplify their mobile experience, switching from a physical SIM to a digital eSIM is now easier than ever. This process allows you to remove the need for a physical card while keeping your current phone number and data plan intact. However, it’s important to know that this change is permanent: once your SIM is converted, the physical card becomes unusable.
Start the conversion process from your iPhone
To begin, make sure your physical SIM is inserted in your iPhone. Then go to Settings and tap on Mobile Data. Inside this section, you’ll see your current carrier listed—tap on it.
If your carrier supports eSIM conversion, you’ll see an option labeled “Convert to eSIM” in blue. Tap this to proceed. Your iPhone will confirm whether your SIM is eligible, and remind you that the switch cannot be undone.
Follow the steps to complete the setup
Next, tap “Convert to eSIM” again to start the transfer. Your iPhone will guide you through several confirmation prompts. The entire process takes less than a minute and does not require restarting your phone.
Once the eSIM is activated, your iPhone will automatically begin using the digital profile, and the physical SIM can be removed. That card is now void—if you ever need to use a SIM again, you’ll need to request a new one from your carrier.
This process offers more flexibility and reliability, as eSIMs are safer from damage and misplacement than physical cards.
