Apple is about to implement a significant change in its iCloud services, and it directly affects those who use older devices. Starting from December 18, 2024, iPhones that are not updated to iOS 9 or later versions will lose the ability to back up to iCloud. An important detail to consider is that not only will the function be disabled, but existing backups will be permanently deleted.
What does this change imply and what solutions do we have?
When we talk about devices with iOS 8 no longer being able to use iCloud backups, it is worth remembering that we are talking about an operating system that has been with us for a decade and, due to its technical limitations, no longer meets the necessary security and functionality requirements for iCloud.
If our devices are compatible, the best option is to update to iOS 9 or a more recent version. This simple step will allow us to keep the functionality of iCloud and our current backups intact. For those who cannot update their iPhone or iPad due to the age of the hardware, Apple recommends making manual backups through Finder on macOS Catalina or later, or via iTunes on Windows or older Macs.
The need for these changes highlights something essential: technology is constantly advancing, and keeping our devices up to date is key to enjoying its benefits to the fullest. Keeping in mind the iCloud+ space and how to transfer all our photos from Google Photos to iCloud, updating allows us to access new functionalities while protecting our information and ensuring our devices work as best as possible.
