Director Robert Eggers, known for his work on the acclaimed film Nosferatu, has been confirmed to write and direct a sequel to the cult classic Labyrinth, created by Jim Henson in 1986. This new project, developed for TriStar Pictures, will feature the collaboration of screenwriter Sjón and a notable production team including Lisa Henson, Chris Columbus, and Eleanor Columbus. Additionally, Brian Henson, son of Jim Henson, will serve as executive producer.
The original film, starring Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie, follows the story of Sarah, who must navigate a labyrinth filled with strange creatures to rescue her brother Toby, kidnapped by the goblin king, Jareth. Over time, Labyrinth has become a cult phenomenon, with annual fan events, screenings in art cinemas, and adaptations in comics and novels.
The news of the sequel comes simultaneously with the announcement that Nosferatu has received four Oscar nominations, including Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Cinematography. This recognition underscores Eggers’ growing prominence in the film industry.
He is also working on werewolves, which already have a date
In addition to Labyrinth, Eggers will also direct Werwulf, a film set in 13th century England, which is expected to be released on December 25, 2026. Eggers has expressed in interviews his preference for making original films, despite rumors about directing a new Labyrinth. “I always have several projects in development, as you never know what will be a success,” Eggers commented, indicating his inclination towards new and innovative stories.
For the moment, there is no information about the return of iconic characters like Hoggle, leaving fans in suspense about how the sequel will connect with the legacy of the original film.
