Instagram has unveiled a new video editing application called ‘Edits,’ designed to provide creators with a comprehensive suite of tools for crafting high-quality content directly on their smartphones. This move positions Instagram to compete directly with existing video editing platforms by offering an integrated solution tailored to its user base.
‘Edits’ is a standalone video editing app developed by Instagram, aimed at giving content creators advanced tools to enhance their videos before sharing them on social media. Unlike Instagram’s built-in editing features, this new app focuses entirely on professional-grade video customization, making it easier for users to create engaging and polished content without relying on third-party software.
According to the app’s listing on the App Store, ‘Edits’ enables users to export videos without watermarks and share them across various platforms, including Instagram, in 1080p resolution. The app supports capturing high-quality clips up to 10 minutes long, with customizable camera settings for resolution, frame rate, and dynamic range. Advanced editing features include single-frame precision, AI-powered animations, green screen capabilities, and video overlays. Users can also enhance audio by making voices clearer and removing background noise. Additionally, the app offers automatic caption generation with customization options.

In a statement, Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing creators with the best possible tools, stating that ‘Edits’ is more than just a video editing app; it’s a full suite of creative tools. He highlighted features such as a dedicated tab for inspiration, another for keeping track of early ideas, a higher-quality camera, and the ability to share drafts with friends and other creators. For those who decide to share their videos on Instagram, the app provides powerful insights into how those videos perform.
Beyond editing capabilities, ‘Edits’ offers a live insights dashboard, providing creators with detailed engagement metrics from followers and non-followers. This includes analytics on how often specific video parts are skipped, allowing creators to refine their content based on audience behavior. The app also facilitates collaboration by enabling users to share drafts with friends and creators for feedback and co-creation.
Currently available for pre-order on the iOS App Store, ‘Edits’ is expected to launch on March 13, 2025, with an Android version anticipated to follow soon after. As the digital content landscape continues to evolve, Instagram’s ‘Edits’ app aims to empower creators with the tools they need to produce engaging and polished videos, enhancing the overall quality of content shared on the platform.
