Apple has released its latest software update, iOS 17.2, and although it comes packed with new features, the security improvements, often overlooked, are of great importance. This update addresses several vulnerabilities in iOS devices and also introduces significant enhancements in macOS 14.2. Let’s explore the five most important security updates of iOS 17.2.
Security as the primary reason to update
Undoubtedly, the new Journal app or the new operating system functions draw attention, but the .2 version of iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma contain significant security improvements.
- Search – Enhanced protection of sensitive information: The new iOS 17.2 update addresses a vulnerability in the Search app, where previously an application could read sensitive location information. The improvement involves more effective redaction of confidential information, ensuring privacy and security.
- Kernel – Enhanced application isolation: Another significant improvement is found in the operating system’s kernel. Prior to this update, an application could potentially escape its confined environment, or sandbox, and access some system data. With iOS 17.2, this vulnerability has been mitigated thanks to better memory management, strengthening the barrier between applications and the core system.
- Safari – Security in Private Browsing: Apple’s web browser, Safari, has also received a major update. Before iOS 17.2, private browsing tabs could be accessed without required authentication. Now, with improved state management, our privacy is ensured.
- Siri – Improved data access control: In previous versions, an attacker with physical access to the device could use Siri to access some user data. iOS 17.2 addresses this issue with enhanced controls, increasing data security even in the case of physical device access.
- WebKit – Improvements in web content processing: WebKit, the engine behind Safari, has also been updated to better handle web content, mitigating the risk of arbitrary code execution through malicious websites.
Regarding macOS 14.2, the update includes twice as many security fixes compared to iOS 17.2, highlighting improvements in Bluetooth, CoreMedia Playback, WebKit, among others. These updates are therefore fundamental to protect us from attacks and ensure the security of our data.
