With each new update to Apple’s operating system, not only our iPhones benefit from new features, but also other devices in the ecosystem such as AirPods. This time, iOS 17 brings with it a range of features for Apple headphones. Although most of these new features are designed and available specifically for AirPods Pro 2, some are extensible to all AirPods models and we can all enjoy them.

Adaptive Audio: transparency mode gets smarter

The crown jewel of this update is undoubtedly the Adaptive Audio feature, exclusively available for the AirPods Pro 2. This function combines Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency into a single mode, designed to adjust the volume of what we’re listening to based on the sounds around us and the interactions we have with the earbuds in our ears.

Let’s imagine we’re on an airplane; Adaptive Audio will work to reduce the annoying drone of the engine, allowing us to immerse ourselves in our favorite music, podcast, or movie. However, if someone starts talking to us, the feature ensures that we don’t miss a single word of the conversation. Enabling Adaptive Audio is as simple as connecting the AirPods, opening the Control Center, long-pressing the volume icon, and selecting the “Adaptive” option.

Custom Volume: no more need to touch the volume knob

Closely tied to the Adaptive Audio feature, the new Custom Volume adjusts playback sound based on our personal preferences and ambient noise. Over time, our iPhone will learn more about the volume levels we prefer, adapting accordingly to provide an experience where the last thing we’ll need to do is touch the volume button.

Conversation Awareness: prioritizing what we want to hear

Also integrated within Adaptive Audio, thanks to iOS 17, we have Conversation Awareness. This feature automatically detects when someone is speaking to us, lowering the volume of what we’re listening to, and further dampening background noise. Furthermore, it amplifies the voices of people in front of us, enabling active participation in the conversation without needing to remove our earbuds.

Muting and unmuting the microphone: a simple gesture

One of the most requested features by users, as stated by Apple, has been the ability to easily mute the microphone during a call. With iOS 17, this feature has become a reality. By pressing the stem of the AirPods Pro or third-generation AirPods, we can mute and unmute the microphone. This function is also available on the AirPods Max by pressing the Digital Crown.

Automatic device changeover: more speed and reliability

The ability of AirPods Pro 2 to automatically switch between connected devices has significantly improved with iOS 17. Now, the transition is much quicker and smoother.

Lastly, there’s a minor visual adjustment: the connection card and battery information that appears on our iPhone or iPad when we bring our AirPods close to it now has a dark color scheme. This way, if we have dark mode enabled, the consistency of this useful pop-up will provide information in the corresponding color palette.

As announced during WWDC 2023, the new functionalities not only enhance the auditory experience itself but also aim to adapt to the needs and preferences of each user. With these additions, the AirPods Pro 2 solidify their position as some of the most advanced wireless earbuds in the market. Meanwhile, the rest of the models also receive new features. A simple software update and it will feel like we’re getting brand-new headphones, clearly music to our ears.
