iOS 17 Update Addresses Major iPhone Criticism, but Elon Musk Remains Skeptical

That Apple’s operating systems can improve in some aspects is clear. Proof of this is iOS 17, presented during the last WWDC 2023, which brings several small changes that clearly significantly alter the experience. And one of them revolves around one of the biggest, and most surprising, criticisms circulating about the iPhone.

Swearing?! Yes, that’s what we’re talking about

It may come as a surprise, but one of the most common criticisms directed towards the iPhone’s operating system is related to its autocorrect feature. And it’s not just about how it corrects, but also about its reluctance to suggest profane words. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, announced last Monday a series of new features coming with iOS 17, and among them, a notable change in the autocorrect function.

Federighi explained that the new update will allow the keyboard to learn the words we commonly use on the iPhone, including those that are automatically replaced by the autocorrect feature, such as certain profanities. These “ducking” words, named for their similarity to a word starting with “f,” are not part of the autocorrect in iOS 17, but users will now have the option to teach it.

The fact that this seemingly minor change was discussed in a keynote presentation of the system is attention-grabbing, especially when Elon Musk himself joins the conversation. In a tweet explaining the changes, the founder and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX simply responded, “Big if true.”

While the significance given to this change surprises the author of these lines, it appears to be something that many people have been anticipating. Alongside other novelties and features of iOS 17, such as offline map downloads, the new StandBy mode, or the potentially industry-changing function that nobody is talking about.

Regardless of Musk’s doubts, iOS 17 will indeed allow for more comfortable typing of profanities. Is it a good thing? In any case, it’s something that, surprisingly enough, has caught the attention of many.
