Summer is coming to a close, September is approaching rapidly, and rumors and leaks about the iPhone 15 Pro are flooding the internet. Thanks to the renowned leaker, Unknownz21, we now have a more in-depth look at the specifications of the A17 Bionic chip that will power the inside of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. And let’s start right there – the numbers are truly impressive.

One small change for one chip, one giant leap for the iPhone

To begin with, the A17 Bionic marks a substantial change compared to its predecessor, the A16. While the latter features a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU, the A17 is equipped with a 6-core CPU and an upgraded 6-core GPU. This additional GPU core promises a significant boost in graphical performance, further raising the bar that Apple has set with its high-end devices.

Another substantial improvement lies in the clock speed of the A17 Bionic, which will have a maximum speed of 3.70 GHz, a leap from the A16’s 3.46 GHz. On the other hand, while some rumors suggested that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models would feature 8GB of RAM, Unknownz21 assures us that it’s more likely they will maintain the 6GB of RAM found in the iPhone 14 Pro models.

In terms of architecture, the A17 Bionic is even more revolutionary. Manufactured using the cutting-edge 3-nanometer process, the chip is expected to deliver a substantial improvement in terms of speed and efficiency. Compared to the A16, which is based on a 4-nanometer process, the A17’s performance is estimated to increase by 10 to 15%. Furthermore, its power consumption could be reduced by up to 30%, translating to longer battery life.

In addition to this, recent findings in the tvOS 17 code by researcher @aaronp13 seem to confirm Apple’s choices regarding the chips in its upcoming devices. The code contains references to four unreleased iPhone models, with identification numbers that align with rumors and Apple’s past strategies: the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models would use the A17 chip, while the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models would continue with the A16.

At this point, it’s abundantly clear that the iPhone 15 Pro is poised to be a true titan in the world of smartphones. With the power and efficiency promised by the A17 Bionic, combined with the design and software features that Apple typically incorporates, this device holds the promise of being a technological masterpiece.

As always, it’s important to remember that we are dealing with rumors, and the official confirmation of specifications and capabilities won’t come until the unveiling event at Apple Park for the new phones. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait much longer. The upcoming Apple event, tentatively scheduled for September 12th, puts us just a month away from learning all the details about the new phones.

Ones that, as we saw with the iPhone 14 and previously with the iPhone 13, take what these phones are capable of to the next level. This time around, the leap in chip manufacturing size is the opportunity for Apple to not just surprise us, but truly amaze us—just as it did with the Macs powered by Apple silicon—with its power and efficiency. The expectations are high, but if there’s one company that can surpass them, it’s undoubtedly Apple.
