It is true that more and more Apple products no longer have that famous “i” in front of the name. However, there are still many that continue to use it, including the most famous of them all: the well-known iPhone. But have you ever wondered why that “i” appears in iPhone, iPad, iMac and more Apple products?

The story is long and depending on who you ask, they will answer one thing or another. However, there are some common features among its origin, as we will see below. The first time the “i” was used as a prefix was with the iMac in the late 1990s. The idea was to unite the excitement of the Macintosh with the ever-increasing entry of the Internet into homes and workplaces (in life in general, that is).

In other words, that prefix refers to “Internet”, according to this explanation, but what about the iPod? The famous music playback device could not connect to the Internet, but it had the letter “i” attached to its name. Why?

In 1998, in addition to the introduction of the iMac, the “i” also referred to other terms such as “individual”, “instruct”, “inform” and “inspire”. Of course, “Internet” also appeared, but it was complemented by the aforementioned words. Thus, the “i” as a prefix means all these things at once, although “Internet” is the primary one.

As a curiosity, Apple does not now have as many names with the “i” prefix. In fact, its latest products have arrived without this letter. Is this the end?
