Microsoft has revealed that it currently uses artificial intelligence (AI) to write between 20% and 30% of the code that powers its software.
During the LlamaCon conference, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared this advancement while discussing the impact of AI on software development alongside Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta.
This remarkable use of AI highlights how technology is revolutionizing code production, although it also raises concerns about the potential outsourcing of jobs for novice programmers in a highly competitive labor market.
Microsoft claims that AI writes up to 30% of its software code
In a similar context, Google indicated that 25% of its new code is generated by AI. These percentages suggest that the adoption of AI in large corporations is a growing trend, primarily focusing on repetitive and data-heavy tasks.
Despite these advancements, the code generated by AI still requires supervision from senior developers to avoid potential failures in production environments.
Nadavella highlighted that Microsoft has seen better performance in code generation in Python compared to C++, which is attributed to Python’s simpler syntax and its dynamic error handling.
The characteristics of C/C++, more related to low-level code, make its automation a challenge. This approach raises questions about whether AI should be allowed to participate in critical updates like the upcoming Windows.
In light of these changes, emerging developers may be at risk, as AI-generated code could limit job opportunities. However, experts advise programmers to maintain a balance, emphasizing the importance of understanding the fundamentals and using AI as a tool, without relying entirely on it to ensure a sustainable professional future.
