There have been several sad news about mass layoffs in the video game sector, and unfortunately, here comes another one. Crytek has announced the layoff of 15% of its workforce, equivalent to approximately 60 employees, due to the delicate market situation currently affecting the sector. This cut adds to the significant figure of over 900 jobs lost in the industry so far in 2025, reflecting a challenging trend that has put several companies in serious financial difficulties.
Crysis is in crisis
The company’s statement also revealed the total halt of development on Crysis 4, a highly anticipated title that was announced three years ago. With the development team now relocated to Hunt: Showdown 1896, plans for the new installment of the iconic first-person shooter series are postponed indefinitely. Crytek has emphasized that this shift in focus is necessary, as, despite Hunt: Showdown 1896 showing positive growth and generating good results, it is not enough to ensure the financial stability of the company in the current adverse environment.
Despite these difficulties, Crytek has reaffirmed its commitment to continue improving and expanding the content of Hunt: Showdown 1896. The company has emphasized that, although the situation is complex, it is determined to overcome these challenges and move forward with its focused game-as-a-service model. However, fans of Crysis will have to wait longer to receive any updates on the fourth installment, as development efforts have been diverted due to the critical situation the company is facing.
Crytek’s decision underscores the inherent volatility in the world of video games, where even renowned studios are not immune to the headwinds of the market.
