Netflix gets tired of the basic plan: either ads or you pay more

Netflix has started gradually removing its cheapest ad-free plan for current subscribers. In various posts on Reddit, it is observed that the platform is asking some users of the basic plan to choose a new plan to continue with the service.

A Reddit user received a notification on the Netflix app that said: “Your last day to watch Netflix is July 13th. Choose a new plan to continue watching”. Subscribers who pay $11.99 per month for the basic plan will have to choose the $6.99 plan with ads, the $15.49 plan without ads, or the $22.99 premium 4K plan without ads.

According to the messages on Reddit, most of the users who have received this notification reside in Canada or the United Kingdom. This action by Netflix coincides with their announcement in January, where they informed that they would be eliminating the basic plan for existing subscribers in the second quarter of this year, starting with Canada and the United Kingdom. The pricing page of the service in both countries indicates that the “basic plan has been discontinued” and that “you can change your plan at any time”.

Last year, Netflix already suspended the basic plan for new members or those who returned in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. However, the company has not specified when it will start removing the basic plan for existing subscribers in the United States.
