Nintendo has confirmed that the new Joy-Con 2 controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2 will not use Hall effect analog joysticks, which means they will not feature the technology that has proven effective in preventing the stick drift issue, which occurs when the joystick moves without anyone touching it. This problem has affected many users of the company’s previous consoles, especially the original Joy-Cons, leading to ongoing concerns about the durability and functionality of the controllers.
Technology Hall: Prevents the joystick from moving on its own
Nate Bihldorff, Senior Vice President of Product Development and Publishing at Nintendo of America, stated that the new Joy-Con have been designed from the ground up, aiming to enhance the user experience in terms of comfort and durability. They are not Hall effect joysticks, but they feel really good, Bihldorff emphasized, highlighting that although they do not incorporate the technology that eliminates wear, they promise a new experience for players.
Traditional joysticks use moving components that, over time, wear out, which can lead to issues like the infamous stick drift. In contrast, Hall effect joysticks use magnets to measure position, minimizing wear and making them immune to this type of failure. Although this technological feedback is well received by the gaming community, the fact that the Joy-Con 2 do not incorporate it has frustrated several enthusiasts.
Since its announcement, Nintendo has reiterated that the design process aims to optimize the consumer experience with each new hardware, whether it’s a system or an accessory. Despite concerns about the durability of these new controllers, the company promises that the changes made are to provide us with the best possible experience.
