Yahoo eyes Chrome as a strategic opportunity

During a Justice Department hearing on Google’s alleged search monopoly, Yahoo executive Brian Provost stated that the company would pursue Chrome with backing from Apollo Global Management, Yahoo’s parent firm. The potential sale price is estimated in the “tens of billions of dollars,” a figure that underscores Chrome’s central role in the digital ecosystem.

Yahoo, once the leader in internet search, has been working to rebuild its relevance since being acquired by Apollo in 2021. The company is currently developing its own web browser, but Provost confirmed that buying Chrome would be a more direct way to compete in the space. This intention emerged quickly after the U.S. government proposed that Google sell off Chrome to reduce its dominance in the search market.

OpenAI also expresses interest in Chrome

Yahoo isn’t the only player ready to act. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has also indicated its desire to purchase Chrome. During the same trial, ChatGPT’s head Nick Turley said the company would be among those bidding if the browser becomes available. This could lead to fierce competition among bidders, all eyeing Chrome’s massive influence and user base.
