The series Heartstopper is in a worrying limbo several months after the release of its third season, which was well received by both critics and viewers. However, despite its popularity, Netflix has yet to confirm a renewal, raising alarms among fans who fear a possible cancellation and who feel that the protagonists are like friends due to the tenderness and good vibes that this series evokes.
Charlie and Nick, we will be friends forever
Alice Oseman, author of the original comics and screenwriter of the series, expressed at the Waterstones Children’s Book Festival that she has not received any news about the continuation of the series. Oseman has stated her desire to conclude the story with a fourth season, given that to date five volumes of the comics have been adapted, while the sixth is still in process. This lack of confirmation is particularly concerning in a context where Netflix has proven to be relentless in canceling series, even those with loyal fan bases, as happened with Shadow and Bone and The OA.
Despite the fact that the third season of Heartstopper did not leave a cliffhanger and closed important narrative arcs, there is still more story to tell. Fans of the series value not only its positive representation of LGBTQ+ themes but also its focus on mental health. The cancellation of the series would leave beloved characters without closure who have built a meaningful connection with the audience.
The uncertainty about the future of Heartstopper has generated unease among fans, who believe it would be a shame for Netflix to discontinue one of the standout titles in its catalog without providing a proper conclusion. In today’s industry, where cancellation decisions can seem arbitrary, optimism is cautious. Fans and critics agree that, due to the value of the story and the representation it offers, the platform should open its wallet and greenlight the final season that Oseman desires.
