That ‘Overwatch 2’ is not living up to the success Blizzard had hoped for is not a new revelation. It’s also true that it’s been on the market for less than a year, and it was only on August 10th that it finally shed the early access label to become a full-fledged game with the announcement of its sixth season, ‘Invasion’. However, there are those who believe that now that they’ve reached this point, it might be time for them to announce ‘Overwatch 3’.

If we look at the data, any company would kill to have their own ‘Overwatch 2’: 25 million players engaging in matches every month, season after season, for nearly a year. However, it’s worth noting that Blizzard has lost half of its player base compared to the first installment, no matter how much they’ve tried to entice them back.

It wouldn’t be surprising, then, if the third installment included everything that the second one lacks, such as the PvE Hero mode (even though ‘Overwatch 2’ later offered PvE missions as an extra paid feature, much to the disappointment of players). This is why some media outlets have even suggested that Aaron Keller, the game director, may have gotten a bit ahead of himself and stated that in this sequel, teams will expand to a 6 versus 6 setup, allowing for the promotion of player creativity.

If they were to announce anything (which is not going to happen), Blizzard would likely take advantage of November and BlizzCon. However, they would probably unveil even more updates for the second installment there, as it is still yielding a substantial amount of profit for them. With the game well-established and a dedicated player community, it would indeed be odd for them to attempt to monetize what essentially remains a very similar game, with few new mechanics to add that couldn’t be delivered through DLC.

As the true ‘Overwatch 2’ journey begins, don’t believe everything you hear from the more sensationalist media. The third installment is nowhere in sight, except perhaps in the irony of some who are convinced (with reason) that Blizzard is willing to make money from the most trivial things. Now, grab that controller: Is it time to give it another shot?
