Sony, known for its dominance in the console market with the PlayStation 5, has begun to implement a series of measures that indicate a direct response to the imminent arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled to launch this year. In a move that has surprised many analysts and consumers alike, the company has significantly reduced the prices of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, actions that previously seemed unthinkable. This price adjustment may be aimed at countering the anticipated cost of Nintendo’s new console, which is estimated to be around 399 euros.
Frustration among PlayStation users has been increasing after the constant price hikes of the consoles, which were previously justified by factors such as inflation and the high cost of their technological components. Now, with prices hovering around 400 euros, many are wondering if Sony underestimates the Nintendo Switch 2’s ability to compete in the market. This shift in Sony’s pricing strategy could be interpreted as an implicit acknowledgment that Nintendo is no longer considered an “outsider” in the realm of home consoles.
The price of virtual reality also drops
Additionally, the PS5 Pro, which initially had a price set at 799.99 euros, is now available at some retailers at reduced prices, approaching 680 euros. The same pattern is observed in the PS VR2 virtual reality device, which has seen its cost drop from 629.99 euros to 449 euros in the market. These price movements suggest that Sony is implementing a strategy to protect its position in a console market that seems to be becoming increasingly competitive.
As we approach the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, Sony’s price changes could set the stage for a renewed battle in the console generation, where Nintendo emerges as a more serious contender than many had anticipated.
