Nintendo has recently revealed the three starter Pokémon that players will be able to choose in the upcoming title, Pokémon Legends Z-A: Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile. This announcement was made during the Pokémon presentation in February 2025, generating great anticipation among the fan community. It is still unknown whether these Pokémon will have alternate final evolutions, as seen in Pokémon Legends Arceus.
Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile like you have never seen them before
Chikorita, the Grass-type starter from the second generation, has historically been considered one of the least popular among starter Pokémon. Its final evolution, Meganium, has limited abilities that could be improved with a possible alternative evolution or Mega Evolution. Rumors suggest that it could receive a second Dragon type, enhancing its existing Dragon-type attacks thanks to STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus), making it more viable in battle.
For its part, Tepig, the Fire-type starter, has a solid design in its evolution Emboar, which is Fire/Fighting type. If Nintendo decides to offer it a Mega Evolution, it could change its typing to Fire/Ground, although this could have adverse effects on its performance due to the general weakness to Water-type attacks.
Finally, Totodile, the Water-type starter, has the potential to receive a new typing in its final evolution, Feraligatr. A plausible option would be for Feraligatr to gain a second Dark type, which would reflect its mischievous nature. Alternatively, it could also receive a new Dragon type, which would combine well with its reptilian characteristics.
Pokémon Legends Z-A will be released in late 2025 exclusively for Nintendo Switch and promises to introduce a new combat system that incorporates real-time elements, allowing for a more dynamic gaming experience. Attack moves will have a specific range, creating additional interest in combat strategy.
