Francis Ford Coppola is one of the most important directors in history. He is the filmmaker behind The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and Dracula, and undoubtedly his cinematic legacy lives on in all kinds of subsequent directors, films, and series. However, all of that is not serving any purpose with what seems to be the last film of his career: Megalopolis.

Megalopolis is a science fiction film that Coppola himself has been writing since the early 2000s. He wanted it to be his next project to return to “great cinema” before getting involved in criticized films like Twixt, Tetro or Youth Without Youth. However, due to its high cost and challenging production, the project was postponed.

Nadie quiere lo último de Coppola

Finally, Coppola decided to put out of his own pocket the 120 million dollars that the film production cost, and with Adam Driver as the protagonist, he finally moved forward. But… not everything was done, and now there is fear that Megalopolis will never be released in global theaters, thus leaving the latest film by the director of The Godfather orphaned.

From what little we know about the movie is that it follows the reconstruction of a great metropolis after a catastrophic accident. It juxtaposes two visions: that of an idealistic architect (Adam Driver) and that of a pragmatic mayor (Giancarlo Esposito). So far, the movie has premiered at some festival —Coppola’s tears included— and has had a good reception… but it’s not enough.

Currently, no studio is betting on the film for distribution. The cost of over 120 million dollars and the fact that it is seen as an experimental film makes many production companies not want to invest in it, especially considering that the name of its director no longer means anything. In fact, even Martin Scorsese’s The Moon Killers did not perform well at the box office… so Coppola is not a guarantee of success.

Mientras el director lucha por sacar adelante su película y hacerla visible a nivel mundial, muchos creen que es una despedida en su mejor momento y que, si tiene éxito, terminará ganando todos los premios posibles. Así que depende de los estudios apostar por ella o no.
