“Sálvame: The Quintessential ‘Trash TV’ Show of the Last Decade in Spain. Presented by Jorge Javier Vázquez, the program that started as a weekly and ended up as a daily brought celebrity news to Telecinco’s sets every afternoon. However, due to its declining viewership in recent years and Mediaset’s new perspective, its cancellation was recently announced. But, of course, that’s not where the story ends.”
Despite the audience reflecting a fatigue with this formula, over a million people tuned in to the final episode of Sálvame, making it clear that there is still a significant following for this type of celebrity-driven content. And who has seized the opportunity? None other than Netflix.
Neither Antena 3 nor any other national network has acquired the rights to Sálvame or offered any alternative, but Netflix has been quick to step in with a continuation. So far, they have created a spin-off in which the show’s contributors, over eight episodes, will travel the world in search of new opportunities after the program’s cancellation.
Has Netflix’s image changed in recent years?
Although it’s currently just a quick and entertaining spin-off, it seems that Netflix is testing the waters to see if this format can find an audience on their platform. And perhaps, if it proves successful, they might create their own version of Sálvame. This move would make sense, especially considering that Amazon Prime Video will be broadcasting the next edition of Operación Triunfo.
However, if we consider that Netflix was initially seen as a platform for high-quality series, while Sálvame was associated with tabloid television and shallow entertainment, we have to question how this decision will impact the VOD service.
Beyond making moral judgments, Netflix’s shift towards shows with broader appeal has significantly changed the public’s perception of the platform. During moments like when they altered their pricing policies, many subscribers decided to cancel their subscriptions without hesitation. The acquisition of Sálvame could be the culmination of this shift, and there may come a time when not even Black Mirror can redeem it.
