If changing the Spotify Like button to a “plus” symbol seemed “radical” to you, just wait, there are curves ahead. At its Stream On event this week, Spotify unveiled a complete redesign of its app, which will feature a new login screen.
With a design that bets more on visual content and vertical scrolling, Spotify’s new feeds are very similar to TikTok‘s style; a trend that is also being followed by other apps, such as Reddit or one of Spotify’s biggest rivals: SoundCloud.
According to The Verge, Spotify’s new design, which aims to help users discover more content and in a much more convenient way, will show on its new home screen the classic album covers and playlists, although it will also recommend podcasts (which will be played automatically, as in the Twitch cover) or playlists that we might like.
We will be able to access a vertical scrolling feed by clicking on “Music” at the top of the main menu. Once we enter, the songs will show us an excerpt of how they sound, so that we can click on it and listen to it in its entirety or save it to listen to it later by clicking on the “more” button.
“Podcasts and Shows,” its podcast section, will also have a vertically scrolling feed. In this section, users will be able to listen to audio fragments of podcast episodes of a maximum duration of 60 seconds, which will also include real-time transcripts of what is happening. It will also allow us to play it immediately or save it for later.
In addition, Spotify introduces a new feature called Smart Shuffle, which will recommend new songs when we are listening to a playlist, automatically adding them to it. We will be able to use this new feature, which is already available, by clicking on the shuffle button of a playlist.
In addition to these functions, there is its recent addition: DJ, a personalized radio station that recommends music that we may like based on the songs previously listened to. An AI that, in addition, is accompanied by a computer-generated speaker that, as described by Spotify, has an “incredibly realistic voice”.
