Spotify continues to introduce new features making use of the latest technologies. In addition to announcing an AI-powered music recommendation feature, known as “DJ”, just this week we learned about a new NFT-based feature. Back in May 2022, it became known that Spotify was conducting several tests with this type of digital asset.
According to TechCrunch, Spotify is reportedly testing playlists that would be unlocked in certain countries using NFTs. Kingship, a metaverse group owned by Universal Music Group, this week released a playlist that can only be accessed using an NFT card.
As many may imagine, this process is not simple, and requires going through a series of steps to link the Spotify account with a cryptocurrency wallet, such as Metamask, Zerion, Rainbow or Trust Wallet, for the sole purpose of authenticating the NFT that would unlock this special playlist.
At the moment, this feature is exclusive to people living in Australia, Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. In addition, only Android users can make use of it, due to Apple’s strict regulations with the apps published in its App Store, which restrict the implementation of NFT features.

In addition to Kingship, other metaverse and cryptocurrency communities such as Overlord, Fluf and Kevin Rose’s Moonbirds are also making use of this feature and creating playlists that can only be unlocked by NFT owners.
Spotify confirmed to the TechCrunch portal that this is one of the many tests being conducted by the music streaming platform, and that at the moment it is an exclusive feature for Spotify Premium users.
“At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of these end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others just serve as important learnings. We have no further news to share about future plans at this time,” Spotify stated.
