Although now remembered by everyone as an underrated gem, Blade Runner 2049 was not well received upon its release. Released in 2017, it was a more than worthy (and belated) sequel to Ridley Scott’s original film, and made it very clear that Denis Villeneuve is a first-rate director —before proving it again with Dune—.

Now, a third sequel to the original movie has been confirmed: Blade Runner 2099. In this case, it will be an exclusive series for Amazon Prime Video set 50 years after the second movie. Additionally, the platform has just announced who will be its protagonist: the Oscar-winning actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once Michelle Yeoh.

Unresolved argument

But what will Blade Runner 2099 be about specifically? Beyond the fifty years that the title marks, we know that the series will have 10 episodes and that it will focus on showing much more of the Blade Runner universe than they could do in the movies.

Additionally, we know what Scott said at the time: “We’ve already written the Blade Runner pilot and the bible. So we’re presenting Blade Runner as a television series. Blade Runner 2099 will maintain the intellect, themes, and spirit of its cinematic predecessors.”

About the plot, what is clear is that the debate about humans and replicants will be reopened, a maxim that keeps appearing over and over again in Blade Runner. It is the franchise’s distinctive hallmark, so it will continue to be explored in this case. But we don’t know much more about the plot. The series, for now, seems to be released at some point in 2026, and if that’s the case, we will have new clues in the coming months.
