OpenAI left us speechless a year ago with the capabilities of GPT-4, the most advanced artificial intelligence model from the company. Since then, many wonder when the next version, GPT-5, will be released, as a qualitative leap of great dimensions is expected.

While Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has not said anything about it so far, this week we have learned the first details about the company’s next big AI.

In an interview with Lex Friedman, an artificial intelligence researcher at MIT and podcaster, Altman made a somewhat cryptic statement about the nature of GPT-5 (unofficial name for now): “… what is the big unlock? Is it a bigger computer? Is it a new secret? Is it something else? It’s all of these things together“.

In addition, the CEO of OpenAI says he is excited to see the next iteration of GPT “be smarter”, although he has not provided further details or clarified when it will be released.

According to Business Insider, OpenAI is expected to launch GPT-5 in mid-2024, probably during the summer. Two anonymous sources close to the company have revealed that some enterprise clients have recently received demos of GPT-5 and improvements related to ChatGPT, the most popular chatbot worldwide.

Like its predecessor, GPT-5 is expected to be a large language model (LLM) that can accept text or an encoded visual input (“prompt”).

And, just like GPT-4, GPT-5 would be a next token prediction model (a fragment of a word), which means it will output its best estimate of the most likely next token in a sequence, allowing tasks such as completing a sentence or writing code.

According to the Business Insider article, OpenAI is still training GPT-5 and, once this process is completed, the model will undergo internal security testing and new “red teaming” to identify and address any issues before its public release. The release date may be delayed depending on the duration of the security testing process.

It is important to note that all of this should be considered as a rumor for now, and we should wait for more information from OpenAI. Will we see GPT-5 this summer?
