The CEO of OpenAI says that if someone commits suicide because of ChatGPT, it is the deceased's fault, as seeking advice on such matters is an "improper use"

The parents of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old teenager who committed suicide in April 2025, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the ChatGPT artificial intelligence provided him with instructions on methods of suicide. According to reports, Raine began using the chatbot in September 2024 and had shared his suicidal thoughts with the platform at the end of that year.

In response to the lawsuit, OpenAI has claimed that it is not responsible for Raine’s death, arguing that his suicide was the result of “misuse” of the chatbot. The company argues that the young man violated the terms of service by seeking information about suicide. OpenAI also points out that Raine already had suicidal thoughts before interacting with the tool and that he had tried to seek help from other sources without success.

A statement from his lawyer, Jay Edelson, describes OpenAI’s response as “disturbing,” arguing that the company is trying to shift the blame onto others, including Raine himself. OpenAI has expressed its condolences to the family and has indicated that the situation requires a full consideration of the facts, suggesting that the lawsuit does not present all the relevant details about the young man’s mental health.

The case has led OpenAI to review its policies regarding the use of the chatbot in mental health issues. In September 2025, the company announced that ChatGPT would no longer be able to discuss suicide topics with minors under 18. However, one month later, OpenAI announced that it would relax some restrictions affecting the chatbot’s usefulness for users without mental health issues and that it would allow the creation of “erotic” content for verified adult users starting in December.
