Greta Gerwig is one of the most cherished assets in present-day Hollywood. The director of Little Women and Lady Bird has become a highly popular and esteemed filmmaker among studios, and her upcoming project makes it clear that she is at her peak: Barbie. Undoubtedly, we are all eagerly awaiting the film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and the credit goes to Gerwig herself.
But Gerwig won’t stop at Barbie. Her career is set to continue beyond that, and she has confirmed this through her new projects. As announced by Netflix, Gerwig will be directing the adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia for the platform.
A new Netflix bet on fantasy
Netflix has held the rights to The Chronicles of Narnia for over four years, acquiring them to create new adaptations of the fantasy classic written by C.S. Lewis. For a while, the platform was figuring out the best way to adapt these books, and they eventually hired Matthew Aldrich, the screenwriter of Coco, Lightyear, and other Pixar films, to take on the task.
With the director confirmed, we now know that it will be a multi-film project, and Gerwig has signed on to direct two of them for now. Netflix’s intention is to continue expanding its roster of filmmakers and turn it into an enduring fantasy saga for audiences of all ages.
The Chronicles of Narnia received three adaptations between 2005 and 2010, which were successful at the box office and reached millions of homes. But this new adaptation aims to take a different approach and be even more faithful to Lewis’ books, reaching a much larger audience thanks to Netflix.
