Since its announcement, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has managed to be the center of controversy due to the inclusion of the new protagonist Yasuke, a black samurai. In this statement, the developers focused on Japanese players, who have criticized the game for “historical inaccuracies“.

In their statement, they explain that “Assassin’s Creed Shadows is, above all, a video game designed to be entertaining and, in addition, it tells an exciting historical fiction set in feudal Japan.” They also emphasize that they have collaborated “extensively with external consultants, historians, researchers, and internal teams from Ubisoft Japan to support our creative decisions.”

“We recognize that some elements of our promotional materials have caused concern in the Japanese community […] for this reason, we sincerely apologize“. The truth is that the figure of Yasuke as a black samurai has generated more debate than it should, despite being based on a historical character that existed, Oda Nobunaga’s servant. However, its origin, whether real or fictional, should not be of great relevance. Ubisoft has emphasized that their goal is not to create a history book, but a work of fiction.

Fortunately, you won’t have to wait long for the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. It will be available on November 15th of this year for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PC, and macOS.
