Cummins has taken a significant step towards the electrification of the mining and railway sector through the acquisition of First Mode, a company specialized in hybrid equipment.
This purchase includes a comprehensive portfolio of intellectual property in electric powertrains, allowing Cummins to access technologies that employ various energy sources, such as internal combustion engines, hydrogen fuel cells, and batteries.
The company plans to launch, in the short term, the first commercially available hybrid retrofitting system for mining equipment. This system is designed to be modular, allowing equipment fleets to convert to full electricity without losing functionality in their existing vehicles.
The need to adapt to the electrical ecosystem in highly polluting sectors
This flexibility is crucial for Cummins to adapt to the needs of its customers, whether they are original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or fleet managers in large mining operations.
Jenny Bush, president of Cummins Power Systems, commented that this acquisition is vital to help customers in the energy transition. “We are accelerating our ability to provide decarbonization solutions that take miners out of high operating costs,” she stated.
The company also believes that its experience and relationships with OEMs will provide them with a competitive advantage over new startups in the sector.
The shift from diesel to electric heavy machinery is not a new concept. Recently, Liebherr converted R 9400 excavators from diesel to electric for use in a Fortescue mine, a project that resulted in an order of 4 billion dollars for more electric equipment.
These initiatives highlight the growing need for sustainable solutions in mining, a sector that seeks not only to reduce its emissions but also to optimize long-term operational costs.
