Once Human—today free to play

My favorite word is “free,” and I’m pretty sure it’s yours too. It is also the reason for the unprecedented success of Fortnite or Fall Guys and the failure of thousands of games that tried to follow in their footsteps but encountered a very simple barrier: there aren’t as many people who want to play potentially endless games. Although, occasionally, there is one that manages to break down that wall and enter the world of free-to-play with strength. This is the case of Once Human, which has basically become the game of the year for this week.
Surviving for free
125,000 players at the same time is not an easy number to achieve on Steam today, and even less so for a game that could go unnoticed no matter how unique its idea is: an open-world post-apocalyptic where metahuman characters have to survive united against the world. And that means they will face gigantic enemies, uncover hidden plots, kill to obtain resources, and eventually create their own safe places.
On paper, it sounds very nice, of course, but the truth is that its developers, Starry Studios, have only seen one way to continue with their plan: divide it into seasons that will be released every few months and that will change everything but will allow players to keep everything they have unlocked before. You know how it goes.
The truth is that the tone, between unreal, mysterious and cyberpunk, has caught the attention of the whole world, and for good reason. There are spider buses and characters with completely creepy faces, taking risks that maybe not everyone would want to take. To enjoy in the game, in addition to creating your unique character completely different from the rest, you don’t have just one option: at the beginning, you can choose between fighting against a joint enemy or against another player. Come on, they start without any taboos and go all out.
Obviously, there is still much to be known about Once Human and it will be revealed little by little as the months -and hopefully, the years- go by. Whether its magical number on Steam will continue to hold or, on the contrary, it will normalize, is something that no one can predict yet. For now, it is a trendy game that you can try with a couple of clicks. Can you resist?
