The new generation of LEDs will have a clear winner: the environment

The future of LED technology is undergoing a significant transformation with perovskite LEDs, a breakthrough that promises not only superior performance but also greater environmental benefits. Researchers at Linköping University have conducted a comprehensive study on these new LEDs, analyzing their cost, environmental impact, and long-term viability in comparison to traditional LEDs.

Perovskite LEDs could revolutionize lighting with sustainability and cost-efficiency

Unlike conventional LEDs, perovskite-based alternatives are cheaper to produce and easier to manufacture, offering a practical solution for commercial applications. Their vibrant and intense colors make them particularly appealing for use in high-quality screens, further solidifying their position as the next-generation lighting technology. However, for perovskite LEDs to replace traditional LEDs, it is crucial to address their lifespan and material sustainability.

A key factor in determining their environmental impact is the reuse of organic solvents and the sourcing of raw materials. Some of the elements used in LED production, such as gold, pose serious sustainability challenges. Gold extraction is not only energy-intensive but also generates toxic byproducts like mercury and cyanide. With this new LEDs, researchers suggest that replacing gold with copper, aluminum, or nickel could significantly reduce the environmental footprint while maintaining the necessary efficiency.

The main hurdle for perovskite LEDs remains their longevity, which currently falls short of commercial viability. While conventional LEDs can last tens of thousands of hours, perovskite LEDs have yet to reach the necessary 10,000-hour lifespan for a positive environmental impact. However, rapid advancements in their development suggest that this goal is within reach, paving the way for a future where lighting technology is both high-performing and environmentally responsible.
