Magic: The Gathering is a game that, thanks to the flexibility of its system and the uniqueness of its universe, allows practically anything within it. That is something they seem willing to demonstrate in the next two years. With some very particular collections that will come in the future, the idea that Magic is pure medieval fantasy is something we must start to discard from our minds. Starting with the collection they just presented.
The next Magic: The Gathering collection is called Bloomburrow. This collection will take us to the world of the same name, which has a very marked peculiarity: it is exclusively inhabited by humanized animals. There is nothing anthropomorphic here. Only small animals living their lives as if they were adorable little humans.
Much of the charm of the collection lies, of course, in its animals. Each type of animal has its pair of colors and also certain notions of what its place in the world is. Birds are white and blue and come to the aid of other animals. Mice are red and white and seek glory. Rabbits are green and white and are renowned farmers and cooks. Bats are eccentric and mysterious defenders of the night. And so it goes with the other seven color combinations and the other seven main types of animals in the collection: raccoons, lizards, squirrels, rats, otters, and frogs.
Part of the charm of this world is that, in addition, it is impossible for there to never be humans in it. If any human arrives at Bloomburrow, in any way, they will become the animal that best represents their soul. Something that has served the wizards to create new and enchanting mythical characters of the game, like Jace, Liliana or Nissa, this time represented in the form of different animals. Something that adds meaning and a special touch to the collection.
While all the cards in the collection are still being revealed, Bloomburrow has already managed to show the most important thing: it has its heart in the right place. It’s charming, sweet, and fun. In addition to demonstrating that Magic: The Gathering is much more than classic fantasy. How it will be received and if it will work as intended is something we still have to see, but what is evident is that we are facing one of the most beautiful collections in the history of the game. And we will be able to try it out starting on July 26th.
