Many mangakas base their entire career on a single work that identifies them as authors. This is the case with Masashi Kishimoto, creator of Naruto, and also with Eiichirō Oda, the author behind One Piece. The latter has been publishing the story of pirate Luffy and his nakamas since 1997, and it seems that he will continue to do so for a long time.
However, there is another work beyond One Piece that identifies him as the author, and now it has arrived on Netflix in the form of a series. Monsters: The Dragon’s Inferno is a manga that Eiichiro Oda drew for Shonen Jump in 1994, when he was only 19 years old. At that time, One Piece was just a distant idea in his head, and the young man was testing ideas to become the mangaka he is today. Now, Netflix has decided to recover that distant work and adapt it into an anime that is already available on the platform.
The One Piece prequel that no one expected but we all want
The curious thing is that Monsters also works as a prequel to One Piece, since it is set in the same world as the series and, as we discover in the Thriller Bark arc, Ryuma is an ancestor of Zoro. In this way, it is a must-watch anime for fans of One Piece.
