The ZeniMax Workers United union has authorized a strike with an overwhelming support of 94% from its members, following a stalemate in negotiations with Microsoft. This measure reflects dissatisfaction regarding fundamental aspects such as competitive salaries, work flexibility, and transparency in the outsourcing of certain jobs. Despite being one of the largest companies in the world, employees have highlighted that they continue to face challenges in achieving basic working conditions.
Some more than reasonable demands from the union
The workers, who play an essential role in the development of iconic titles like Indiana Jones and DOOM: The Dark Ages, argue that the multinational has offered proposals that do not adequately address their demands. “Paying their employees a living wage as a multimillion-dollar company is the least they could do,” stated a union representative. Low wages have led many to pause their lives as their income does not match the rising cost of living in the cities where they work.
Microsoft, for its part, has acknowledged the importance of the quality control team and has presented a package of proposals that includes an immediate increase in compensation, improvements in benefits, and the implementation of a hybrid work model. In statements to the media, the company emphasized the need to resolve this conflict fairly and equitably, recognizing the substantial contributions of its employees: “Our quality control team is an integral part of our business”.
Against the backdrop of the opening of negotiations and strong union action, the coming weeks are expected to be crucial for both sides. While workers are determined to fight for tangible improvements, Microsoft wants to retain a key team for the future of its projects, in a context where the competition for talent in the video game industry is fierce.
