China is preparing to revolutionize the world of digital connections with a new audiovisual standard called GPMI, which may challenge and even surpass HDMI and DisplayPort. Backed by a consortium of 50 companies, this technology aims to simplify and improve how we transmit video, data, and power.

One cable to rule them all

Unlike HDMI or DisplayPort, GPMI combines video transmission, data transfer, networking, and power delivery in a single cable. It supports up to 8K resolution and offers two connector types: Type B and Type C, the latter being compatible with USB-C. This versatility means users may soon ditch multiple cables in favor of just one that does everything.

Performance beyond current standards

The performance specs are especially striking. GPMI Type B can reach 192 Gbps and deliver 480 watts, far outpacing HDMI 2.1b’s 48 Gbps limit and even the 96 Gbps of HDMI 2.2. In comparison, DisplayPort 2.1 caps out at 80 Gbps. Even GPMI’s basic version offers double the bandwidth of USB4 and Thunderbolt 4, making it one of the most capable interfaces ever created.

A global rollout remains uncertain

Despite its technical edge, GPMI faces significant hurdles outside of China. Since it is being developed by a Chinese-led alliance, its adoption in Western markets may be slowed by regulatory and political barriers. For now, its dominance might remain regional—but if it gains international traction, it could redefine the global standard for wired connectivity.
