Throughout the film, we see how the foundations of this family are shaken, until the final climax arrives with great doses of laughter… but also of nostalgia and melancholy. The script by Eduard Sola is its great strength, combined with masterful performances by the main cast.
A family in their twilight
A House on Fire places us in the life of Montse (Emma Vilarasau), an autocratic family mother who is excited because she can finally spend a weekend with her entire family (including her ex-husband, although as a surprise) at her house in Cadaqués, on the Costa Brava. Her goal is to sell the house, inherited from her family, and to say goodbye to it along with her two children. However, the weekend will soon prove to be not as ideal as expected.
With a classic structure of a comedy of errors, the film soon reveals the vulnerabilities of this family and makes it clear that, under their facade of a perfect Catalan bourgeois family, everyone has much to hide. A House on Fire is a classic film in its form, but so well constructed that it has earned, on its own merit, all the achievements it is receiving.
